Week 51 to year end #Project365 – 2014

Well here we are at the end of the year again. The end of the 3rd year doing this project. It’s been rather tough this past few months.  I’m working again and don’t always have the time or the inclination, plus we don’t see so much of the oldest grandson now that the baby grandson has arrived. I’ve found it hard to find something interesting to take photos of so perhaps next year (oh yes I’ll be back) I’ll use one of those prompt doodahs to help me on my way.

At the last update on the 14th we were getting excited for the arrival of our youngest son and his wife who were coming over from Australia.
They arrived on the 16th and I noticed the flight arrived at 9:40am, we eventually had a text to say they were on the way at 12:20pm. I assumed they were on the coach and watched the progress on the Nat Express website. We drove to Newport to meet them but when the coach arrived minus them my heart sunk.. where were they?? A minute or so later (great timing!!) I had a phone call to ask where we were….!! He had hired a car so drove straight home!! GRR>>>

The next few days flew by, shopping trips, running them here, there and everywhere making sure they caught up with everyone. Our older son was so glad to his brother, he’s missed him so much, but I feel that he may not miss him quite so much now that he knows he’s happy and will be popping home again at some point.

Christmas day was lovely. A nice breakfast to start the day. Oldest son, DIL and grandsons arrived at midday and there was much excitement opening presents, toy truck and lots of playdoh for Ashley to play with.
Wonderful Christmas lunch followed by lots of photos and fun.
They were due to leave on Boxing afternoon but changed their plans to fly into San Francisco rather than LAX as it’s closer to Sacramento where her parents are currently residing.
Saturday afternoon came all to soon and we bid them goodbye after dropping them off in Newport.  They are now spending New Year with her parents and friends before returning home on the 5th January.

Actually not much else to tell you about, other than him coming home it was the same old same old..

Here’s a selection from the past 2 and a bit weeks..

Week39 – 22nd September to 28th September

We flew out to Brisbane on the 22nd, it was a long, long journey! The first flight was to Dubai and we had just over 3 hours at the airport. Then it was on to Singapore for a refuel stop before the final leg to Brisbane, arriving at 11;30pm on Monday.
We spent the next few days with our son and his fiancee before moving down to the Gold Coast – Broadbeach for the wedding.

We went to see the Brisbane Festival light show – lots of lights and water jets to music held on the river.
The day before the wedding I went to the Brides Mum’s house for a ladies Morning tea, lots of fun. Games and quizzes and ending with us making a wedding outfit out of loo rolls!

They got married on Broadbeach by the Bride’s father. Lovely ceremony and at the end another pastor joined her dad to say a blessing.
When the group photos were being taken someone noticed some whales leaping in the ocean. It just couldn’t have been any better!

Week 40 – 29th September to 5th October

We hired a car on 29th and started the drive down to Sydney. The first stop was at Byron Bay, it’s a lovely town full of surfer dudes and very olde world feel, it reminded me of Newquay, Cornwall.
Our second stop was at Coffs Harbour, it was very windy and quite dull when we got there.  There’s not much of a town and to be honest Coffs was quite disappointing.
On the third day we decided to push on to Newcastle – a 4 hour drive so that we could arrive in Sydney on Thursday rather than Friday as planned. Not much in Newcastle either although the drive along the Pacific Highway was very pretty.
We arrived in Sydney on Thursday to a very heavy clouds and by the time we booked in at the hotel it had started raining. Although we had no coats or brolly we still decided we weren’t going to waste a minute of our time there. We dashed in and out of shops and when the rain stopped just after lunch we went down to the harbour. We didn’t know until we got to Sydney that the Fleet Naval Review was on. It celebrated 100 years since the navy’s arrival at Sydney Harbour. You may have seen it reported on the news.  It culminated in a HUGE fireworks display in the harbour on Saturday evening. Apparently there were over a million people at the harbour – there certainly were more people in one place than I’ve ever seen!!
Sydney is a fantastic place – so much to see and do both on land and sea. Plus you get to drive in over the Harbour Bridge and sit on the Opera House steps.
We flew back to Brisbane on Sunday 6th October to spend the last few days with our son and his bride. They had gone north to Port Douglas and Cairns for their honeymoon and were due back the same day.

Week 41 6th October to 12th October

It was great meeting up with our son again and we made plans on Sunday afternoon to go to Australia Zoo on Monday. Lee found a site that did an inclusive trip which would take us almost door to door.  The zoo is owned by the Urwin family and the best known of course was Steve Urwin who was killed by a stingray 7 years ago. The zoo is huge and thankfully has water misters at regular intervals to cool you down – it was 36 degrees when we were there!!  You can get up close to most of the animals too. Some are carried about by the handlers and you can touch and get photos taken with the animals. I touched a koala and a kangaroo.. !!
They also have a great show to show off the crocs and the birds.
The only photos for the week will be of the zoo visit – I’ve been too jet-lagged to even think about taking photos!!

#Project365 week 28 day 2 – 3 things

When I was planning this post I thought I’d post about 3 things,  a good, a bad and an ugly.  The Bad – the news story today about the ‘Whole-life tariff’ breaching a prisoners human rights. I’m not even going to go there as this post will go on and on.. If you want find out more you’ll have to Google it.. Sorry…

I’ve been sorting out more of my son’s belongings *.. yeah I know I’ve been doing it on and off for weeks..but today was the box with all the glass, mugs, various crockery and knick-knacks. Amongst it all was 2 shot glasses that one of his fiancees friends sent them from Australia and one of his Jack Daniels glasses. So that was the 3 things – 3 things that remind me of my son and where he is.

3 Things

3 Things

* for those new readers – my youngest son went to Australia to be with his (then) girlfriend and has now decided to settle there now that they are to be married. All his belongings were in storage and it’s been my onerous task to sort it all out and get it sold or donated.

Do you have sons/daughters living far away? How do you stay in touch?

#Project366 Last Week

Ok here I am again catching up!

It’s a busy time of year if you are a ‘Comper’ – December heralds the onset of Advent Competitions. OMG there are loads of them! You have to be pretty ruthless and choose the ones you want to enter but also remember that the ones needing effort are more likely to have low entry levels so this type are always worth doing!!
My spreadsheet is listing over 200 daily competitions at the moment and there are also the ‘normal’ competitions to get on with too.. Plus all the lovely high value ITV ones!

My general mood at the moment is improving greatly after a rather testing 2 weeks. It all kicked off when looking for a present for YS who is in Australia and it’ll be the first christmas we’ll not be seeing him. His brother (oldest son) is missing him so much – they are very close- and it upset me to know that he too wanted him home for Christmas.  I really thought I was heading down that dark depression road again but I’m managing to hold it off at the moment.

I know some people go very long times not seeing their loved ones, either because they are now living away or in the forces. For whatever reason I hope your loved ones are safe and well and you’ll get to see them soon.

Here is a selection from the past week.
340/366 Grandson after rummaging my handbag and finding my sunglasses.
341/366 Do I have enough Fudge.. to be fair that’s one for OS, one for YS and one for us!!
342/366 Tempted to dangle a few baubles on this tree in the garden!
343/366 Some berries on a pyracanthus.
344/366 Hubby decided to give the freezer a wipe out and dropped the top drawer..new one on its way!
345/366 Astounded when I saw these tiny daffodils in planter outside the local pub, in flower in December!!
346/366 Koala keyring arrived today along with pressies for hubby and me. All the way from Oz!
